Fears a proposed plant that would turn methane into electricity could explode are “mildly alarmist,” an engineer working with the proposed biogas plant in London’s east end told politicians yesterday.

But with one city councillor comparing potential risks of the site — planned next to an indoor soccer dome — to the Hindenburg disaster, council’s planning committee put off a decision for more information.
“I feel like we’re parking the Hindenburg right next to the soccer dome,” Coun. Steve Orser said, referring to a Toronto propane plant explosion last year.
John Ferguson, an air-quality engineer working with Bio-En Power, which is behind the proposed development, dismissed any such catastrophe as unlikely.
“I’m not familiar with any facility of this kind exploding.”
